Fresh Mother’s Day Traditions

Mother’s Day just seems a little lackluster…there’s the breakfast in bed, a gift or two…but as holidays go, it just doesn’t have the glamour of say, Christmas or Halloween.  But trust me.  As a mom, I can tell you we DO like Mother’s Day.  Christmas is a beating for us to put together.  Our birthday yet another reminder of how old we are.

But Mother’s Day?  It’s the day we’re reminded that we did something good.  Really good.  We brought these amazing souls into the world.  And we are prouder of them than anything else we will do in our lives.

So, you might want to step this day up a little…and we’ll make it up to you on Father’s Day.  Deal?

1. Seven Days Of Mom: don’t panic, it doesn’t have to be huge.  A note from one of the kids.  A homemade flower vase.  A note on the sidewalk in front of the house with sidewalk chalk that reads something like “Best Mom In The World Here.”  I love the “picture pillows” from ApartmentTherapy.com, who says they’re easy to make.

2. Getting Mom’s Life Story: I only wished I’d started this sooner with my mom.  Mary Helen is an incredible mother and Nana–but she was also a visionary, rose from poverty, saved so many at-risk babies and moms, travelled all over the world.  I think knowing the triumphs and trials of your parent’s life gives a whole new perspective to the child that “yeah, Mom does get it!”

3. I Love You, Mom!  And Here’s Why: a card with a scribbled “love you Mom” is nice, but why not take a minute to fill out a cute questionnaire that really makes everyone think about why Mom rules?  There’s a cute list from JustReed-Ashley@blogspot.com.

4. I Love You, Now Go Away: I mean this is the nicest possible way.  Take the kids and leave for a few hours.  Let Mom read a book.  Take a nap.  Garden.  Stare into space.  It’s the kindest thing thing you can do.  Then, come back.  Make dinner and do the dishes.  You are the Best Family Ever.

Moms: are there any ideas I’ve missed? Add them on!

I say, skip the gifts and spend a few hours cleaning the house while letting mom nap, watch tv, read a book, or whatever else she might want to do. A clean house is a much better gift than anything that can be bought 🙂
