Hey, ISIS? You Just Got Your Collective Butts Kicked–By A GIRL
My favorite board on my Pinterest page is called “Amazing Women,” and I started it because I wanted my 3 year-old Zoe to know who truly amazing women were, not the ones that got famous from a sex tape. If you were a child growing up in today’s celebrity culture–it would be completely logical to think that the way to fame and fortune was making a loathsome, murky sex tape that you would then sell to a sleazy porn outlet. Then, you would cry the tears of shock and shame at it’s release while signing a reality tv contract. Seriously! That’s why I was so thrilled to pin the story of Major Mariam Al Mansouri. She’s the first female fighter pilot for the United Arab Emirates and led a strike mission against key ISIS hideouts in Syria over the weekend.
ISIS is pretty much everything world leaders fear and despise: an ultra-fanatical group that declared the establishment of a “caliphate,” this summer. A caliphate is an Islamic state stretching across the territory it has conquered. The brutally harsh and strict rules for women include being lashed for infractions such as not being fully covered. and it removes any possibility of rights, employment or education for women and girls. The group’s brutal beheading of US hostages has caught international attention, but even more alarming is the extremist’s spread over Syria and Iraq. Many of the Arab states are joining in on military action against ISIS along with the western world. But there’s nothing more awesome to me than the selection of this woman to lead the strike force.
Major Al Mansouri wanted to be a fighter pilot since high school–but it took nearly 10 years to finally work her way into the division in an almost exclusively Arab male military force. She’s modest and well-spoken, wears the hijab and oh, wait ISIS–kicked your butt. Here’s what Major Al Mansouri said: “We are in a hot area so that we have to prepare every citizen. Of course, everybody is responsible of defending their country — male or female. When the time will come, everybody will jump in.”
I’m so thrilled for any activity that brings down such a brutal and ugly regime. But let’s be honest: as women? This is the best thing I’ve heard all year. ISIS got it’s butt kicked. By a GIRL.
