Talk To Yourself Like You Would To Someone You Love

Talk To Yourself Like You Would To Someone You Love…

I’ll be honest.  This week has been a beating.

shame

“You’re so stupid!”

“I can’t believe you did that!”

“You are the worst mother in the world.”

“Wow, congratulations on that.” (Sarcastically)

If someone spoke to me like that, I would have knocked them across the room by the second day of this kind of verbal abuse.

But it came from me.

This started as an experiment after watching “Listening to Shame by the amazing Dr. Brene Brown.  She said something there that just paralyzed me.

I listened to my inner monologue carefully this week, and I do not talk to myself in a loving way.  I would never say these words to my children, to to family or the people I care about.  So, why would I say them to myself?

I’m feeling exposed as I’m writing this, knowing that you now know how I talk to myself.  But I’m wondering if I’m the only one who refuses to give myself a break.  How is your self-talk?  Dr. Brown’s “Shame” talk is actually the second in a really mind-blowing series where she teaches you about yourself–the first is called “The Power Of Vulnerability.”  Both talks are less than 20 minutes and so worth your time.  I would love to know what you think…and how you speak to yourself afterwards.
